The saying “you are what you eat” is often used to describe physical health, but it is equally true that you become what you feed your soul. Every thought we entertain, every word we speak, and every act of kindness or selfishness shapes our inner life. The Bahá’í teachings remind us that the soul is our true reality, and its nourishment comes through love, service, prayer, and guiding others with compassion.
The Báb beautifully explains the value of spiritual guidance: “It is better to guide one soul than to possess all that is on earth… The path to guidance is one of love and compassion, not of force and coercion.” This profound teaching reminds us that material wealth is temporary, while the influence we have on another person’s spiritual journey has eternal significance. True guidance is never imposed; it is offered through genuine love, understanding, and example.
Likewise, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá encourages us to examine our lives daily: “We must strive with life and heart that, day by day, our deeds may be better, our conduct more beautiful and our forbearance greater. That is, to cultivate love for all the world; to attain beatific character.” These words invite us to feed our souls with virtues rather than pride, forgiveness rather than resentment, and hope rather than despair.
When we choose kindness, patience, and service, we nourish the soul with qualities that endure beyond this earthly life. The treasures of this world fade at death, but a soul enriched by love and dedicated to helping others remains under the mercy of God. What we feed our souls today determines the light we carry into eternity.
